Linux kernel 2.4.31

Usage

• Grsecurity:

  See also grsecurity extension.

• iptables:

  You need the patched iptables packet iptables-fiasko-nf for this kernel. The iptables binary of this packet will not work with vanilla kernels.

• LZS compression

  To use the isdn_lzscomp module it have to be loaded by the user (e.g. put it in /etc/modules). The module parameter comp sets the compression ratio (took from the module source):

  	    /*
  	     * Values for comp:
  	     * 0 - do no compression at all, send uncompressed
  	     * 1 - do absolute minimal compression (somewhat fast)
  	     * ...
  	     * 8 - do optimal compression (heavy but still useable)
  	     * 9 - do ultimate compression (chews up nonsense amounts of CPU time)
  	     */
  	

  On establishing a connection ipppd croaks that it has found the module. To make ipppd using it, you have to comment the line nolzs in /etc/isdn/ipppd.ipppX and add a line like:

  	    lzs 1:4
  	

• CryptoAPI's Cryptoloop Module

  To use the cryptoloop you need a recent (>=2.12) version of mount. Mount comes along the util-linux source package. A recent version could be grabbed from http://www.backports.org/.

  If you like the idea of an encrypted swap partition/file, tryout the cryptoswap package.

For each of them it is build the kernel-header and kernel-image packages. The package names are build as: kernel-image-2.4.31-fiasko-(ide|scsi)-(athlon|i486|...).

The patched kernel source is found in the kernel-source-2.4.31-fiasko, the kernel documentation in the kernel-doc-2.4.31-fiasko package.
